Indications

Semaglutide oral tablet is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist indicated for:

  • Type 2 diabetes :
    As an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control.
  • Cardiovascular disease risk reduction (indications vary by region):
    Reducing the risk of serious adverse events related to cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Mechanism of action

Semaglutide mimics the effects of GLP-1 hormone, increasing insulin secretion, decreasing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

Dosage

  • Initial dose : 3 mg once daily for 4 weeks to help you get used to the drug.
  • Maintenance dose : May be increased to 7 mg or 14 mg daily based on patient tolerance and treatment goals.
  • Directions :
    • Take daily on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes after waking up) with water (up to 120 ml).
    • Swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing.
    • Wait at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines.

Precautions

  1. Side Effect Monitoring :
    • Common side effects : nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation, abdominal pain, etc.
    • Serious side effects : pancreatitis, hypoglycemia (risk increased when used with sulfonylureas or insulin), abnormal kidney function, vision changes, etc.
  2. Use in special populations :
    • Pregnant women : Not recommended, may be harmful to the fetus.

Contraindications
